"Flowers and the Space Between Them" by August Jankowski
Art as Work is pleased to present “Flowers and the Space Between Them,” an installation conceived by the Maryland artist August Jankowski.
For my exhibit, I wanted to explore the dual themes of isolation and change in everyday life through abstract collages. Using pieces of photographs from the magazine National Geographic, I create mix-and-match compositions that connect abstraction and recognizable imagery. I'm interested in collage work because it allows me to take existing images and reshape them into something new and creating unexpected connections that create one cohesive story by using many other stories (like parts of photographs).
Flowers serve as a central motif in my work because they naturally grow in groups and symbolize life and connection with the world, and how we could also make connections with each other. This ties into my exploration of everyday life and the emotions people go through- both seen and unseen. By putting my pieces in isolated environments, I aim to make emotional connections with my viewers by helping them realize moments when they’ve felt alone or isolated, even in a group setting, which many of us have experienced at some point.
August currently lives and works in Clarksburg, Maryland.
