It's not the right one by Danielle Silva

"It's Not the Right One"

Art as Work is pleased to present 'It's Not the Right One', an installation conceived by the Maryland artist Danielle Silva. Currently lives and works in Westminster, Maryland.

Traversing through the highs and lows of mental health can be both exciting and exhausting. You do everything your doctors tell you to do, expecting to make you feel better. Nothing is more thrilling than the possibility of finally feeling like everyone else. Wake up, take a pill, eat, go through the motions of life, take another pill, go to bed—repeat. They say if you keep at it, you’ll feel great in no time.

Do this routine over and over again and they tell you how in no time you’ll feel great. That’s if you have the right medication because there are so many options that could work for you, but which one is the right one? Wake up, take a different pill, live your life, take two more pills, go to bed—repeat. Can we ever find the right one for you? Try this for three months, then reassess. Didn’t work? Let’s switch it up—two months on something new. Strange… still nothing? Another three months, another adjustment. A constant change, a constant routine but never the results you expect. Can you ever feel better? Even when you try your hardest to improve, is it ever enough?

With these two pieces, I intend to portray the struggle of mental health and the frustrating emotions that arrive when dealing with it.

Artist Statement

Birds can be found everywhere, including backyards, urban areas, and rural spaces. Because of their commonness, they can be overlooked. A person could walk through a park and not even notice the variety of chirpings and singing coming from the trees. But if you do notice, there is beauty in every song and a distinct look in every bird. With vibrant patterns, delicate feathers, and colors ranging from muted earth tones to striking hues, each bird tells a different visual story. In a way, they can reflect the emotions of a person; think of it as a mirror, birds and humans are complex and important in their own way. Each bird, from a crow to a parrot, can evoke a different feeling and behavior, as if they embody a unique mood or emotion we might experience. By utilizing mediums like paper collage and charcoal, I intend to show the relationship between birds and human emotions. In bringing these elements together, I hope to reveal how these aspects reflect one another as being intricate, expressive, and essential to the beauty of the world around us.
