Portraits By Alena Hemphill (2025

Art as Work is pleased to present Portraits, a installation conceived by the Maryland artist Alena Hemphill.

These two drawings, one a pencil portrait and the other a charcoal still life of cups and a vase, reflect my exploration of the intimate relationship between objects and their ability to convey personality. While drawing the still life, I found myself approaching the objects as if they were people, each with their own character and presence. In this way, a still life becomes a form of portraiture, where the subtle expressions and histories of the objects emerge through shading, form, and texture. The pencil portrait, on the other hand, was an exercise in capturing a human likeness, but in both works, I aimed to create a deeper connection to the subject. These drawings were a way for me to practice observation, but also to explore the quiet stories that can be told through the lines and shadows of any form, whether human or inanimate.

"Human", 18 x 24, pencil.

"Cups and a Vase", 18 x 24, charcoal.

Alena currently lives and works in Westminster, Maryland.
