Transcendent Spaces

Art as Work is pleased to present Transcendent Spaces, an installation conceived by the Maryland artist Cara Olson.

Transcendent Spaces is a collection of works that depict my generational trauma and how it has an impact on my sense of being and perception of space. Specifically, this series depicts how generational trauma caused me to develop dermatillomania, a skin-based repetitive picking disorder. Within the pieces, the fox represents myself, as I feel paralyzed and unable to express my emotions properly when going through traumatic events. Each piece is set within a space where these situations were experienced, changing my relationship to the location of the space now that these experiences have occurred.

The works go through my development of dermatillomania; starting with how family arguments inhibited my perception of my own state of being and ending with how I have confidence within the work I produces but lack self-confidence due to negative views of my own body and scarring. Each piece is correlated and set within the space where the events took place within my home.

Cara Olson currently lives and works in Mount Airy, Maryland.
