Walking Among Sentinels of Time

Art as Work is pleased to present, Walking Among Sentinels of Time, an installation conceived by the Maryland Artist Conny Spiess.

In a world often consumed by the digital blur, my work invites viewers to pause, reconnect, and rediscover the glowing beauty of the natural world. Through my art, I celebrate the profound joy of stillness, leaning against a strong, timeworn tree, the way a single bright leaf or a tiny flower can catch the eye and spark wonder. Inspired by the nature that surrounds me, I hope to share this sense of deep appreciation and awe for the small details often overlooked.

My mixed-media creations blend traditional art with tactile elements to reflect the richness and texture of the environment. Using gouache, alcohol markers, and oil paints, I build layered compositions that draw the viewer close. Employing techniques like using a palette knife, I emphasize texture to create depth and encourage exploration of my pieces from varying perspectives. Recently, I’ve merged fiber arts into my practice, incorporating embroidery, beads, and sequins onto both watercolor paper and large oil paintings. This tactile approach mirrors the intricate details and unintentional beauty found in nature itself.

Through my work, I hope to inspire a moment of stillness—a breath of fresh air, a chance to look closely, and a renewed appreciation for the glowing, vibrant world that often lies unnoticed all around us.
